Switzerland
Contemporary Switzerland, land of four languages, is all about once-in-a-lifetime journeys, heart-racing Alpine pursuits and urban culture. Sitting in the heart of Central Europe, it shares borders with five of the continent’s wonderful and unique countries — France, Germany, Italy, Austria and Liechtenstein. It has a unique political system of direct democracy, a landlocked mountainous geography with numerous lakes, and a high standard of living.
Switzerland is famous for it’s stunning Alpine landscapes and world-renowned chocolate and cheese, but also for its long tradition of neutrality, high global quality of life, and leadership in finance, watchmaking, and international organizations like the Red Cross. The majestic Alps cover nearly 60% of the country, offering breathtaking scenery.
All of this combined puts Switzerland tourism high on almost every traveler’s bucket-list.
BERN
The capital of Switzerland offers a lot. The cobbled, flag-bedecked medieval Old Town is a UNESCO World Heritage treat, with 6km (3.7 miles) of covered arcades, cellar shops, bars and fountains topped by fantastical folk figures, plus the eye-grabbing Zytglogge clocktower. Bern is one of Switzerland’s most beautiful cities. Between all of the sights on offer, the city also offers you plenty of nature and a chance to refresh yourself on the River Aare.
ZURICH
Zurich is the largest city in Switzerland and best place for sampling the good life. Everything here says “the good life,” from the cool waterside bars on the banks of the Limmat River to the alley-woven Old Town, where the sun shines through an Augusto Giacometti-designed rainbow of stained glass at the twin-spired Grossmünster church, founded by Charlemagne in the 9th century. Zurich offers you a mix like no other: a metropolis offering many sights meets water, nature and mountains. Simply spectacular!
GENEVA
Geneva is an international financial center, and a worldwide center for diplomacy. The European headquarters of the UN or the ICRC are located here. The city on Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) has a picturesque old town with many sights and beautiful parks. The fantastic mountain panorama around Geneva will amaze you. This famously cosmopolitan city makes an excellent launchpad for exploring the region, with big-hitting museums and galleries to absorb, botanical gardens to stroll, lidos to swim, cafes to hang out in and bright-yellow mouettes (water taxis) ferrying locals across the water – surely one of the world’s most scenic commutes.
INTERLAKEN
Interlaken is a traditional resort town in the mountainous Bernese Oberland region of central Switzerland. Built on a narrow stretch of valley, between the emerald-colored waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, it has old timber houses and parkland on either side of the Aare River. Its surrounding mountains, with dense forests, alpine meadows and glaciers, has numerous hiking and skiing trails.
ZERMATT
Zermatt, the enchanting mountain village in Valais, is synonymous with the Matterhorn, probably the most famous mountain in the world. Zermatt will amaze you with its beauty in summer and winter. You will also be stunned by the idyllic charm that the village radiates. Zermatt is more than just a one-mountain wonder, however. Climbers have been rocking up here since the middle of the 19th century, and it’s still a magnet for mountaineers set on challenging summit ascents in the Alps.
LUCERNE
Lucerne is one of the major stops on any trip to Switzerland. In addition to the unmistakable cityscape with the lake, Chapel Bridge and historic old town, Lucerne offers many sights and is the perfect hub for excursions to the region around Lake Lucerne. Make time for the iconic Kapellbrücke bridge leaping across the Reuss River, and the art treasures inside the Jean Nouvel–designed KKL arts center and the Sammlung Rosengart museum, home to a prized private collection of Picassos.
